Imagine a founder starting a company that is initially worth very little. There is an idea, some early work, and perhaps a small amount of capital, but no durable business yet. If the company disappeared tomorrow, there might be almost nothing for someone else to buy.

Then the company begins to work. It finds customers. Revenue grows. Employees develop expertise. The business builds technology, operating systems, supplier relationships, a reputation, and a base of customers who continue to return. Eventually, it produces meaningful profit or a credible expectation of future profit.
